The ENGAGE campaign continues in Liege

By Béatrice Alcaraz on 6 June 2017

A pilot city of the campaign launched in 2010 as part of the Intelligent Energy Europe project, Liege is continuing to develop pledges in favour of the climate.

Recently, the energy unit of the City of Liege took part in the Plant Exchange organised at the botanical garden, an opportunity for thousands of nature lovers to swap or buy indigenous plants or seeds, or to meet associations actively involved in environmental protection.

It was also an opportunity for visitors to commit to and pose for the climate. After choosing a pledge from the "charter for the climate of the inhabitants of Liege" or proposals typically related to the garden, visitors were photographed and received a small “energy” gift (miniature windmill, small Earth ball, power strip with a switch, pencil, etc.).

The Liege ENGAGE campaign involves all stakeholders, including administrative staff, shopkeepers, citizens, community organisations and schoolchildren.
The city has designed various “Energy-Climate” charters for different target groups ranging from minor to more demanding pledges to suit all levels of commitment.
Examples of pledges:

  • Switch off appliances when not in use – no more devices on standby
  • Develop a mobility plan for one’s activities, deliveries and supplies
  • Use renewable energy sources or promote them in supply contracts (green electricity)
  • Buy environmentally-friendly products whenever possible
  • Opt for low-energy lighting devices for the inside of shops, shop windows and signs
  • Give away unused clothes and toys

By setting an example, the municipality has managed to get the rest of the population on board and raise citizens’ awareness. ENGAGE posters can now be seen all round the city: the convention centre, universities, railway station. To date, 823 posters have been produced.

In 7 years, the city of Liège has sensitized its citizens to the use of the bicycle. In May 2017, following the annual count, the city noted a 17% increase in cyclists compared to 2016, which represents an increase of more than 50% compared to 2008.

After joining Energy Cities in 2007, Liege is now taking a more active role in the association and was elected to the Board at the last General Meeting.
