Policy brief: #TakeControl

By Claire Roumet on 3 November 2016

#TakeControl was the slogan of the pro-Brexit campaign. Brexit supporters based their campaign on the intervention of EU rules in their everyday life, on the imposition of Brussels’ "lax" immigration policy... Taking the opposite approach to this vision, the NEF (New Economic Foundation), a UK-based think-tank, offers a new definition to this slogan.

In matter of energy, taking control means offering alternatives to the big market leaders by drawing from local resources and initiatives. We can respond to the fears and concerns of our societies by taking back control over our destiny. And to do so, we can take several paths, some leading to nationalist isolation, and others paved with concrete alternatives involving citizens.

The path Energy Cities suggests to walk is defined as our "3D" energy future, with devolution, divestment from fossil fuels and democracy - implying solidarity between local governments.

It is doubtlessly useful to remind what we discussed with researcher Gilles Debizet in Paris on 18 October: it is not about replacing a centralised production system managed by big national companies by a multitude of islands cut off from the outside world. It is about making the networks more reliable by building on an energy “web” where interdependence between players will provide resilience and security.

A spider web isn’t strong because of its centre; it is strong because of an infinity of dots linked to each other.

Hey! You have always dreamed of being a dot on a spider web? Join the Energy Cities network ;-) See how to join here.
