What is the city’s most ambitious target in terms of sustainable energy?

The city of Paris adopted its first Climate and Energy Plan as soon as 2007. It sets ambitious objectives that go beyond the EU "3x20": "3x25" between 2004 and 2020 (a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions, a 25% reduction in energy consumption and bringing the share of renewable or waste energy in the energy mix to 25%) and even a "3x30" objective to reach by 2020 for the local authority, who has to be exemplary. The Climate Plan is part of a long-term strategy as it aims at reaching the "factor 4" (dividing GHG emissions by 4) by 2050. These objectives have been reaffirmed when updating the Climate Plan in 2012 and still represent a wonderful challenge driving our action.

Moreoever, we have established some sectorial objectives which are more detailed in order to coordinate as best as possible the implemented policies, such as the low-energy retrofitting of 4,500 social housing units per year or bringing the share of renewable and waste energy in the district heating supply to 50% by 2016. These operational targets are vey useful as they can more easily be undertaken by all concerned local players. It is also easier to monitor this kind of indicators, which is helpful to adjust our action with sufficient reactivity.

What are the benefits of being part of the Energy Cities network?

Energy Cities brings three crucial things to the city of Paris.

First of all they look kindly (but critically when necessary) upon our energy transition policy: good ideas, cooperation opportunities in many projects and the exchange of best practices with a very enriching international aspect are part of the network’s daily activity.

Then, this is a great way for territories in energy transition to get heard at European level. Energy Cities isindeed able to positively impact on European policies to develop the tools necessary to the transition and cooperation between territories. And this is a two-way process as the members can benefit from relevant information and anlayses on the EU institutions’ dynamics and projects.

Finally, Energy Cities contributes to showcasing committed territories and thus to raising general awareness on the key issues at stake as regards climate and energy.
