The policy and action agenda that will emerge from the Paris agreement should provide a clear support to the local needs for action. The same applies for the Sustainable Development Goal on sustainable energy which will need to be implemented first and foremost at the local level.

While there is broad acknowledgement that cities need stronger autonomy and powers to carry out the energy transition and to tackle climate issues, many of those involved in the debate are not fully aware of the (legal, financial,...) prerequisites that would improve local governance. Energy Cities’ COP21 Dialogue creates the space and time to discuss and filter the best conditions for the energy transition to flourish.

Local decision-makers from North and South, Europe and America will discuss with you how they are

  • Inventing a new local governance through cooperation
  • Rethinking local finance for better governance

Mr. Rob Hopkins, co-founder of the Transition Towns Network, will introduce the debate. He brings humor, imagination and vision to the great challenges of our time, and argues that what is needed, above all else, at this time in history, is “engaged optimism”.
